African American Pioneers of the Pacific Northwest
by Dionne Bonner, Tacoma WA
Originally created in 1994, this exhibit features 13 African American pioneers of the Pacific Northwest. Each portrait is a larger-than-life oil painting, measuring 36 x 48 inches, hand painted on canvas and presented in gold-plated frames.
Accompanied by written biographies, the paintings offer a powerful visual and historical narrative, honoring the extraordinary individuals who overcame insurmountable obstacles against all odds. Together, the collection illuminates defining moments in American history and provides an intimate glimpse into the lives, resilience, and contributions of African American pioneers who helped shape the Pacific Northwest.
A handful of portraits from this series are available to view at The Washington State Black Legacy Institute (WSBLI) Black History Art Exhibition, 2656 42nd Ave SW, and is open to the public by appointment only. To schedule a tour call Roger Evens at 206-272-0669.
